THE JOURNEY

They say 'a journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles' an apt quote for a journey of giraffes crossing a lake bed in Ndutu, Tanzania late one afternoon. Seeing the giraffes in the distance about to cross the shallow water, we positioned the game vehicle further back to capture the moody backdrop of the stormy skies and a leading line of low angle light illuminating the water into a ribbon of gold. This was a stunning opportunity to photograph the giraffes profiles in silhouette, but as it turned out only from a high angle. Trying to avoid any camera shake, I held my camera high above my head after scrambling up onto the the roof of our stationary game vehicle. Photography can sometimes be physically demanding, and the effort involved to get the right angle and elevation needed to capture the crossing giraffes in full silhouette here was certainly worth it.
